East Tennessee fishing
The Watauga River is one of two tail waters in the immediate area – the South Holston river is just 6.2 miles from Rocky Shoals Cabins. In addition, the Doe river is 1.4 miles away and Stoney Creek 2.3 miles away are TWRA Stocked streams.
Tailwater fishing
The TWRA does a superior job stocking and maintaining the fishery and the Watuaga river boasts more than 4000 rainbows and brown trout per mile. Trophy fish are common – especially in the area at and below the Rocky Shoals Cabins.
Always check the schedules and use proper caution.
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) generates power using Wilbur Dam that discharges into the Watauga River. While this keeps water temperatures and conditions for trout almost perfect all year round – the generating schedule causes water levels to rise dramatically down river during generating and can be very DANGERous for fishermen attempting to wade.
The TVA publishes daily generating schedules for Wilbur (and all TVA dams on their website) www.tva.gov/environment/lake-levels/Wilbur.
